One of my favorite pacific northwest summer activities is beachcombing with my children.  We collect treasures- sea glass, heart-shaped rocks, unique shells.  Yesterday on the beach, my 6 year old was frustrated that his treasures were not accumulating as quickly as mine.  “What is your trick?” he asked me.  I explained to him that I practiced scanning with my eyes for the shiny objects.  I noticed how much focus it required, but how rewarding it was to find my tiny treasures.

Beachcombing reminded me of another skill that I have been cultivating in my life- scanning for the positives, the small wins in my days.  Sometimes it can be so easy for our brains to see only the grays of the sand and the rocks- the areas where we still struggle, the obstacles, the what ifs — that it can be hard to track our progress or bask in the glory of what is truly working well.  I am training myself to spend more time showing my brain the treasures in my life, even during times when they take extra effort to find.
